The Joseph M. Still Burn Center was founded by its namesake in 1978. That year Dr. Still treated 33 burn patients and in 2006 the center admitted over 2000 acutely burned victims. This translates into an expansion from one bed in the ICU to an independent 59 bed center with 25 critical care beds. The Joseph M. Still Burn Center is the largest burn center in the country and the third largest in the world. Over the years the care has been transformed into a center for burn victims of all ages, the youngest a precious two days and the oldest 105 years.

The complicated nature of our patients poses a special set of obstacles. Burn injuries are recognized as catastrophic injuries and have a designation as such. The complex nature of the medical and surgical course calls for more than just surgical specialists. The foresight of Dr. Still to recognize these challenges and implement solutions has led to the most comprehensive care burn patients can receive. The Joseph M. Still Burn Center has two intensivists that dedicate their practice to our patients. This translates into physicians that are intimately aware of the nuances and challenges of the burn patients, therefore they can easily anticipate the course of the illness and institute measures to overcome the hurdles.

Additionally, children account for nearly thirty percent of our patient population. Their medical care is managed by a pediatrician with over 20 years of experience with our young burn victims. Functional outcome is imperative for not only our youngest patients but our adults as well. Getting these patients back to their productive lives is our utmost goal. The Joseph M. Still Burn Center has incorporated physical medicine into every patients care. The Burn Center has its own physical and occupational therapy department with dedicated therapists who evaluate and treat not only the inpatients but also the patients returning for follow up care in the outpatient clinic. To insure the best functional outcome a physiatrist oversees the physical medicine aspect.

When we think about the catastrophic nature of the burn injury it is easy to get caught up in the medical and surgical needs of the patients. One of the unique aspects of the Joseph M. Still Burn Center is that we have a psychiatrist and psychologist on staff to treat our patients. They have become well acquainted with the trauma of burn injuries and offer a whole different type of therapy to help them heal. It is impossible to innumerate all the dedicated specialists and members involved in this world class team.

Though the Joseph M. Still Burn Center is focused mainly on burn patients the expertise in skin care has led to the creation of the Advanced Wound Management Center in Doctors Hospital, which is run by Dr. Robert Mullins. The outpatient clinic treats in excess of 1000 patients each month. Those patients needing hospitalization can depend on the knowledge and experience of these surgeons. Throughout the Southeast the Burn and Wound Centers have become icons of superior care. It is really one close knit family that has the dedication of all the members involved.
